RIS Installation Problem

Hello Group,

I'm new to using RIS, I've done a lot of reading on the web about the
pro's of using RIS. I have tried to set it up on a Windows 2003 Server
Standard Edition. I can load the disk images of a Windows XP SP2
Slipstreamed and a Windows 2000 Pro SP1.

My problem occurs after I hit F12 to do PXE, the client computer gets
an IP and then I have to hit F12 again to do a boot, but then I get the
message "NTLDR is corrupt. The system cannot boot". It never gets to a
menu window to choose my load source.

I've googled for about a week now and have not found any links that
helped out. Any help from this group would be greatly appreciated. If
this is not the correct group for me to start in please let me know
which group I need to go to.

Thanks in advance for all you help.

On your search via google, did you find the following KB article?

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I've found that one and it does not help
any. I'm not sure where I have gone wrong here.

Mmmh... Is this behavior with both images you created? How did you
create the images?

cheers,

I went to Admin Tools on the Server that is hosting RIS and went to the
Remote Installation Services Setup, and did the "Add a new OS image to
this remote installation server" I put the CD in and it started to copy
the disk to e:\remoteinstall and on the "Previous Client Installation
Screens Found" I selected the "Use the new client installation screens,
and rename the old ones with a .bak extension."

I have even tried to install the OS on the pc and install all the
custom software and the use RIPPREP to push the image up and I just
keep getting the same error when I try to boot with PXE.

Thank you for your time with this matter.

If you are getting an IP address then your computer is added properly
to AD with the correct GUID. Based on what's occuring, I would suggest
trying a different Network card and seeing if this resolves the issue.
You could also try using a Ris boot floppy disk too...

Just a couple suggestions, though you've probably already tried em ...

Good luck :)

Hi Steve!

Do you mean to change the NIC in the computer or the server? The server
has 2 10/100 that are built on the mobo and there is no room for an
additional card as this server is in a 1U case and the one slot is
filled with a RAID card.

I have not tried a RIS Boot floppy though. Do you have any examples or
know of a website that would have a good example of one?

I did download a program called RISME by emBoot. It does not show any
menus out there, is this possible? Do you know of any way to check this
out?

Thanks for all your help!

Also the RISME program cannot find any image files ending in .img Does
the RIS process create a *.img file?

Thanks,

Hello group!

Ok I have figured out my problem. I was able to do a successful PXE
boot and install to a VMWare image. So I was able to confirm that RIS
was working, so on a whim I updated the firmware on the PC's I was
trying to install and low and behold it worked.

I feel pretty dumb right about now. Sorry for posting when there was
such a simple fix.

Thanks for everyones help in this matter!

-regards
