Right Mouse Click No Longer Works in Windows XP

Some odd circumstances

Using my right mouse button within Windows XP no longer brings up a menu. If I right click a Desktop icon, the Start menu, or an icon from within Windows Explorer, nothing happens. Right mouse clicks do work within programs I am running

In Windows Explorer clicking on the menu items (File, Edit ....) does nothing. The only one that appears is the Favorites menu

I cannot select any of the icons on my desktop with either a left or right mouse click. I get an hour glass for a few seconds, then nothing. I can't launch them (by mouse or by pressing enter), delete them, move them, etc.... If I try to, the icon I clicked on stays highlighted and I can't then click on any other desktop icon. (I can delete them via a command prompt.

I've run a full virus scan - nothing found

Any suggestions?

Try this solution offered by MVP David Candy to a query just like yours:

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT. Go to Lt. pane:

HKCU\S'ware\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Look in the right pane for a value called NoViewContextMenu.
If found, Rt.click this > select Modify > change the value to 0 (zero).
If not found, Rt.click the right pane > select New, DWord value
and name it NoViewContextMenu > leave it at 0.

Note: If NoViewContextMenu doesn't exist, you may have to create the
Explorer subkey under Policies. Use the same method as above, for creating
a new value.

Reboot.
