Double-Click no longer works

Hi -
We are running Windows XP Professional. I am no longer able to double-click
to open files, programs, etc. My work around is to right click and goto
Open. Any ideas? I tried the mouse in another computer and it works fine.
I also checked hte mouse control panel but nothing. I also tried to do a
restore to last week when I know double clicking worked - but restore failed
saying that nothing has changed. Any help is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks

I ran this script but still no luck (even after a reboot). Double-clicking
doesn't work anywhere.... even if I double-click the title bar of a window
to maximize! Any other ideas?

There is a control panel, Mouse app that lets you set the timing of the doubleclick, which Might be set too short.

No luck with that either - I have never seen this problem before - any other
suggestions?

I assume you tried the doubleclick setting change and it failed to show the response to any doubleclick at all. In that case, I
think you can blame it on the mouse driver, and I would try uninstalling that to upgrade it.

Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the mouse device, Action menu, "Uninstall", then restart Windows, to find the
device driver again automatically.

IF you have other pointing devices installed (built-in mouse pad, etc, called "HID" or Human Interface Devices), you might try
temporarily disabling all others (except the keyboard) and see if you get the d-click back.

Thanks for your reply -
Yes, I did change the doubleclick setting - but still no response. I did
exactly what you suggested - and tried using device manager to uninstall the
mouse driver. I then rebooted - but nothing. Sooooo frustrating! I see
alot of users have posted messages with similiar issues. Any other ideas? I
appreciate your help!

If a number of people all see the same error at the same time, I would assume some new software is being installed on all of them.
Perhaps a new virus, spyware, or a windows update file, etc. Some hardware or driver you all have in common.
