Double Click doesn't work in XP

Thought I'd share my frustrating experience and solution to this
problem (since I found nothing on the web). And before someone states
the obvious, no it wasn't the double click speed in control panel ->
Mouse.

Anyway, a few days ago Windows XP decided double clicking was no longer
a registered command. I couldn't open, close or select anything with
double clicking. Single click and right click operation was fine. I
opened up Mouse properties in Control Panel and tried everything.
Swapping buttons (to try if double click on right button worked),
slowing double-click speed (duh), uninstalling, re-installing mouse
drivers (with reboots, removing/replugging mouse, trying different
mouse etc in between). Nothing. I even resorted to searching the
registry to see if double click speed was set to a really fast speed
(low number) in another place, but nope.

I found the solution when I logged into another account on my machine
and double clicking worked! So something was corrupt with my user
profile.

I took the following steps re-create my profile:
1. BACK UP files in the corrupt profile (favs, mail settings/archive,
my documents etc.)
2. Loghed in using another account (double click should hopefully be
working)
3. Right click My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced tab
4. Select Settings under User Profiles
5. Choose your profile
6. Delete (Do this at your own risk)
7. Restart
8. Log in to the account with the profile you just deleted (which will
recreate your user profile from scratch).
9. Restore backed up files.

Hope this helps someone experiencing the same problem.

Automated Fixes :
1. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm [Line#18]
2. http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_folder_open.htm

How to fix it :
1. Click Start > RUn > Type REGEDIT > Click OK
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
Right side, Set "Default" to "none" (Without quotes)

Thanks, but when I had the problem, single/double clicking say, a
folder, would always respond just as a single click (just highlight the
icon/folder). It didn't bring up a search window as indicated by the
two links. But if this helps someone else with a similar problem then
great!
