Right Mouse Click Hangs

Working on an Intel Pentium 4 Windows XP Pro SP1, I right
mouse click on My Computer or My Network Places (either on
desktop or from the Start Menu) and the computer hangs.
The CPU is pegged and the machines locks up. After a few
minutes it will catch up with the mouse, but who has time
for that? I have scanned for viruses with the most
updated virus definitions and found nothing. Anyone have
suggestions?

I had this problem after installing Critical Update
821557. After I uninstalled this update my right click
worked agin. I work on other XP machines that were not
affected by this. Only some were. Hope this helps. I do
not know ifd Microsoft has done anything to fix this
dilemma.

Hi, Juli.

I also suspected that a recent update (not sure which
one) causes error messages (on C:\PROGRAM) popped up when
I login with the account used to install the update.
However, I am not sure. How did you check which update
caused your problem with right mouse click? Or did you do
this by try and error?
