I am faced with a similar problem as described at this link:

i.e.

Right-clicking on desktop icon starts install instead of a menu.
OS: Windows XP Professional

What could cause this? Is there a way to fix it? Please tell me what to do.

What kind of installation got started? Does it happen in safe mode [F8
while
booting]? Check it in safe mode, if it doesn't, check out your startup
list
from Start > Run > msconfig \ Startup, and also, run a spyware/virus scan.
