right click or hover for description

Usta be a program (freeware I think) wherein you could add descriptions to
folders and you could right click or hover over the folder and see what the
elongated description was. I used this in Win 98 but is there an XP freeware
version? The name escapes me. I check Pricelessware and Arsclip sounded sort
of like it, but not sure.

Not sure about Arsclip, but try InfoTip Extension from
http://www.na.rim.or.jp/~norio/index-e.shtml . It hasn't been updated
since 99, but from the little I've played with it, it works on Windows
2000 and I'd assume Windows XP as well.

Note: Info Tip extension does nothing in XP; installs ok, but does not work
as described for 98; not surprised.

Shellcity.net is a great site. Haven't found anything there yet, but some
things look promising.

Thanks.

It's easy to spend quite a bit of time there. Unfortunately, the
layout is terrible. They really should have categories.

This any good?
"InfoTag Magic (formerly ID3Tag Infotip) is a Windows shell infotip
extension that displays extra data stored in the tag fields of MP3, WMA and
Ogg Vorbis files in a tooltip window when mouse pointer is hovered over a
file in Windows Explorer.

Also it provides quick preview for plain text files, such as TXT, INI, LOG,
BAT, DIZ, BAK and QUE. As a bonus feature InfoTag Magic displays various
properties (target file name, location, working directory, arguments) for
Windows shortcuts and version information (file and product version numbers,
product name and description, internal name and copyright) for executable
files, such as EXE, DLL and OCX."

Perhaps, File Annotator Shell Extension at
http://www.copperfieldpub.com//main.htm?toolsfile_utilities. Older
software, but it is designed to work with WinNT.

If you use NTFS on XP then if you r/click file name select properties -
open you have boxes for title, subject author category keywords and
a summary of information, fill in the blanks. hover the mouse over
the file name and a yellow popup box opens. It is not fully perfect
dependant on actual content of the boxes.

notes do not appear to be saved to a CD which is irritating nor
transferred by ftp which is even more annoying.

Some software vendors have managed to get the boxes so you cannot edit
their content, but they are not letting on how its done. (mainly *exe
files).
