Right Click Open With

Open With right click dialog choices are gone. I used to be able to right
click on an AVI file and have VLC, Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic
show up as choice - no choices now. If I right click and go to properties I
have a choice to change (box is checked and grayed out), but change is made.
I also had choices for ISO, TXT, NFO, RAR, JPG, etc. The only one that gives
me a choice is ZIP. I went to Kelly's Corner and installed 220 and 241
rebooted and they didn't do the trick. Everything else seems to be working
OK. If I double left click the default app launches for the files.

I read the other posts including one I made a long time ago, but no luck.

Thanks in advance for your help.

JustUs,

Programs like Spybot Search & Destroy cleans up the Open With list if you
have the TracksUI option selected

When you open those files again they should re-appear in the list

If you have Winzip or WinRar installed then you can re-associate ISO
extensions with those programs

If you go open any folder: TOOLS menu | FOLDER OPTIONS | FILE TYPES & then
you can choose the application that can open those applications or Open the
file, click the bottom option to choose, click browse & file WMP etc
manually. It will then allow you to tick the box to use that program to
always open. However, if you select it from the list that is already there
then you won't be able to select the control to always use that program...

Try reinstalling the shell32 dll file:

Copy and paste this one line into the Run box:
%WinDir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /i %WinDir%\system32\shell32.dll

I installed S&D it made a few hits, but none that corrected my problem.
Thanks for the try ;)

Additional...
I installed ShellExView and didn't find enough help file to know how to use
it properly. I installed Ramesh's OpenWithAdd and it didn't seem to restore
any of the Open With apps either.

Still at a loss for a solution.

Help me understand what "dialog choices are gone" means.

You right click your file, slide to Open with and there is a >
indicator and a list of choices should be offered...

There should be a list of programs and an option to Choose Program.

Exactly what do you see when your mouse hits the Open with selection?
Absolutely nothing changes or you don't see the choices you think you
should? No Choose Program?

Have you tried Malwarebytes? Please download it, install, update and
do a full scan after answering the first question.

The 'OpenWith' list on the right-click sub-menu is defined in more than one
place in the registry. These different locations have their different
priorities. One place in the registry that they are set is this::

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.zip\OpenWithList]

My example uses .zip and if you were to look up this key and the values
therein, you will find the list that corresponds to your 'OpenWith' list
when you 'right-click' a ZIP file. What you could do, is manually add an
open-with list for .avi files using the .zip file as a template. But only
if you feel confident in doing so.

*NB Many people will want to criticise the above advice but to them I would
say: It is not easy to mess up your registry, you have to WILLFULLY change
settings of importance. You cannot 'accidentally do this by just browsing
through it. The area of the registry cited above is not a critical one by
any means and changing settings there will have no major consequences.

Oh yeah... are you looking at files in Windows Explorer? I have just
been opening folders and right clicking files and NOT using Windows
Explorer.

It's the same thing as Explorer is the Windows shell process. Even the
desktop is 'explorer'. Same 'right-click' menu in either.

Tim -

I tried your suggestion with out the desired results. In fact, I went to the
same registry entry on another system and used it for a guide. All of the
various default apps for ZIP, ISO, RAR all appear on the right click menu,
but the Open With selection is empty. I even rechecked the applicatiion
preferences and redid them. I reinstalled WinRAR. So, not sure where the
issue is. Is there another registry key that should have/need this same
information?

Thanks again for the help.
