Right-Click in Outlook no longer works, selectively

D

Dan

Hi,
this had been posted last month by someone, and now I
have 2 such cases as well: Outlook (2003) no longer works
with right-clicking the mouse (tried different profiles):
When right-clicking a message in the inbox pane or a
contact or a calendar item, nothing happen. Maybe a
little 'flash', but no context menu. Clicking everywhere
else in Outlook still works and there are no problems in
any other applications. Since I have seen at least 2
other posts prior and elsewhere, this must not be unique.
Any idea how to fix the right-click ?!! Detect and repair
didn't do anything. SP1 installed, no change.

Thanks,
Dan.

does it help to restart outlook or reboot?

The outcmd.dat file shouldn't have an affect on the context menu, but it
might be worth renaming it to see... C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. You can easily access
it by pasting %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook in the
Address bar of your browser or Windows Explorer.

Diane, thanks for the reply.
No, restarting Outlook or the computers doesn't help. As
I said, neither did detect and repair or SP1. I will try
renaming the dat file though and let you know !!!
As I said, while not common, this does seem to be a
recurring problem lately, but nobody has pinpointed yet
what the cause is.

Thanks,
Dan.

if renaming the dat doesn't work, try creating a new profile and see if it
works in the new profile. This can help us eliminate some files as the

Diane,
I tried this, but to no avail. A, the dat file simply is re-created, but the behaviour, on either of the 2 systems, doesn't change. Then, I tried a brand-new profile - same thing, the right-click is not working.

Any more idead greatly (!) appreciated :)

Thanks,
Dan

Diane,
nope, no pop-up blockers running at all. I even disabled
the ATI Graphics Card Driver's functions (which extends
the right-click on the desktop), but to no avail. No SP2
installed either, disabled Virus, again, no luck. All I
can say is that if I do a search on the newsgroup, there

resolved....

Hi,
this had been posted last month by someone, and now I
have 2 such cases as well: Outlook (2003) no longer
works
with right-clicking the mouse (tried different
profiles):
When right-clicking a message in the inbox pane or a
contact or a calendar item, nothing happen.
Maybe
a
little 'flash', but no context menu. Clicking
everywhere
else in Outlook still works and there are no problems
in
any other applications. Since I have seen at least 2
other posts prior and elsewhere, this must not be
unique.
Any idea how to fix the right-click ?!! Detect and
repair
didn't do anything. SP1 installed, no change.

Thanks,
Dan.

Dan,

I have had the same problem (Outlook 2002) and I found something that worked
for me while searching Google... Hope it works for you!

Mark

I will quote the post:

"Possible Fix:
I'm not sure why this works but it did while I was on the
phone with Microsoft Premier Support --
Do a reinstall of Office XP. When completed, start Outlook
in safe mode (Start->Run->type "Outlook /safe")

The "Please wait while Windows installs Office XP" window
came up and when Outlook finally launched, I could right
click on mail items and calendar items. Re-launched the
app in regular mode and all was well.

Hope this helps."

Indeed :)
Well, anything else you think I could try ? I disabled
most anything I could think of last night (virus,
services, you name it), but to no avail....

Thanks!
Dan

Yeah... it's hard to resolve it when so few suffer from it. :( only someone
who has the problem and later figures it out will know what causes it.

Diane,
nope, no pop-up blockers running at all. I even disabled
the ATI Graphics Card Driver's functions (which extends
the right-click on the desktop), but to no avail. No SP2
installed either, disabled Virus, again, no luck. All I
can say is that if I do a search on the newsgroup, there
were 2 other individuals that had the same problem over
the last 2 months; doesn't seem to ever have gotten
resolved....

Thanks,
Daniel

one more thing - do you have any thing like pop blockers
running?

(e-mail address removed)...
Diane,
I tried this, but to no avail. A, the dat file simply
is re-created, but
the behaviour, on either of the 2 systems, doesn't
change. Then, I tried a
brand-new profile - same thing, the right-click is not
working.

Any more idead greatly (!) appreciated :)

Thanks,
Dan

:

if renaming the dat doesn't work, try creating a new
profile and see if
it
works in the new profile. This can help us eliminate
some files as the
cause.

Diane, thanks for the reply.
No, restarting Outlook or the computers doesn't
help. As
I said, neither did detect and repair or SP1. I
will try
renaming the dat file though and let you know !!!
As I said, while not common, this does seem to be a
recurring problem lately, but nobody has pinpointed
yet
what the cause is.

Thanks,
Dan.

does it help to restart outlook or reboot?

The outcmd.dat file shouldn't have an affect on the
context menu, but it
might be worth renaming it to see... C:\Documents
and
Settings\username\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook.
You can easily access
it by pasting %USERPROFILE%\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook in the
Address bar of your browser or Windows Explorer.
