Hi,

Recently Windows Explorer "crashes" when I right click in blank space
(i.e. not right click on a file). This also occurs when clicking on the
File menu, and when selecting "new folder" icon on a save dialog.

The "crash" is the hourglass for about 30s then "progran not
responding". The rest of the system appears to work OK and I can still
start a new instance of Windows Explorer afer, but the fault will
recur.

I am assuming it is something to do with the "new" function????

My system: Windows XP Home SP 2 all updates installed; AVG free
antivirus, MS Antispyware beta and Ad-Aware all up to date and scanned
clean.

Only recent newly installed programs( AFAIK) are: updated Opera 8.54
and updated Winamp 5.21 (although that was a few weeks ago)

This is causing a lot of problems as I cannot make any new folders to
store and reorganise files.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Usually caused by an error in one of the Right-click context handlers.

Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers

Thanks. With help from one of the websites you posted, I solved the
problem.

After reading at : http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm

I used regedit to check the key: HKCR/Directory/Background/shellex/

I found two additional subkeys as well as "new" which is apparently
supposed to be there after a clean WinXP install.

The key I removed was called 00nView I don't know what installed it,
but deleting it solved the problem.

Thanks again.

You're welcome.

In the future, could you please include some of the message you are responding to, in your

Thank you. Sorry I will try and include quoted previous message in
future.

I was using the Google Groups interface to access the newsgroups and
the default "reply" function didn't seem to add the previous message,
but I've found out how to do it now, as you see!
