Right click causes Explorer to crash

R

Roger

4 days agi I had a problem in that I could not Right Click and delete a .RTF
file. Since that appeared to be only file I didn't think much of it.
Eventually was able to MOVE it to a floppy (couldn't delete it from there so
threw floppy away.
Now I discover I cannot RENAME numerous files with Right Click. I cannot
DELETE files with RIGHT CLICK.
Each time I get "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and must close"
A report get sents to MS but I doubt anyone actually reads those reports.
I hope soneone can provide answer as I don't want to spend the next three
days doing fresh install of all programs.

Do a system restore to a date prior to the onset of this problem and see if
that fixes it. If you haven't used system restore before, check the help
file.

Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers:

Ron, Thanks for reply but I tried a number of different restor points with no
fix.

Also tried a different mouse.

I can delete or rename files using tool bar commands. The problem seems to
be strictly related to any attempt to use Right Click .

Long shot: Any chance you have the Google Desktop Toolbar installed? I
noticed it did that to my machine when I tried it out. I had to remove
it to get things to work right again.

Do not have Google desktop on this PC. But removed Google IE Toolbar just to
check. Did not fix the Right Click Crash problem

File name has no relationship. Right click shows drop down window but if I
try to rename or delete any type or size file Explorer crashes.
Luckily I have a separate file management program that I have been using for
10 years+ on multiple comupters, which has a trash can so I can delete files
but even in this program when I try and right click it also crashes.

Went to the Slow right click link. Ran the progran and checked all but the
shell items except for Symantic and Adobe which would not allow ne to
deselect the shell in the registry.
I am now going back in to the Registy and see if I can disable either or
both Symantic and Adobe shell.

FOUND THE FIX!

To others having Right Click Crash problems
Try the program here
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
as suggested by Elmo

I tried disabling a number of the keys even ALL and did not solve the problem.
I suggest NOT following the TIP.

Sort on TYPE
ONE AT A TIME disable the items under CONTEXT MENU

ShellExView solved my problem following this approach.
