Reviewing toolbar

I am using Word 2003 and for some reason, I cannot enable my reviewing
toolbar. I've tried to customize my toolbars (Tools/Customize) and the
Reviewing toolbar is not grayed out but when I check the box by it, a check
mark won't even appear.

I've also tried to display it by right-mouse clicking by the toolbars below
the menu bar but the reviewing toolbar does not appear.

Thanks.

In Tools > Customize, select the Reviewing toolbar and click the Reset
button.

If that doesn't work, see
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm for some more
drastic steps to try.

Hi Jay,

The reset did not work but the winword.exe /a works. But I noticed that it's
not permanent. So how do I now change the Word icon shortcut to run
winword.exe /a? I'd prefer not to touch the registry.

Thanks.

In that situation, deleting the Data key is the only solution that's going to
work.

I can assure you that editing the registry -- provided you stay in the area
described in the article -- isn't dangerous to your computer's health. I do
recommend that you do step 5 first (exporting the key to a file so it can be
restored if you want to) and follow the link to
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/DataKeySettingsContent.htm#PreserveSettimgs
to save your other settings before you delete the key.

Hi Jay,

I deleted Data in Office 11.0/Word but nothing changed. Any other ideas?

Thanks.

It's unlikely, but it could be a third-party add-in -- for example, do you
have a document management system? A Norton security product? Adobe Acrobat?

Use the steps in
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm
and/or http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011514521033.aspx to
locate any add-ins. Remove them all (more on that...) and see if the toolbar
reappears. If it does, then start putting the add-ins back, one at a time,
and restarting Word after each one. The one that makes the toolbar disappear
is the culprit.

How you remove an add-in depends on what kind it is and where it comes from.
Some are templates in the Word Startup folder (described in the articles),
so simply moving those templates to a different folder will remove them from
Word on the next startup of the program. To remove COM add-ins, you can
usually disable them through the dialog described in the articles. The
second article adds steps for a couple of hard cases. To put the add-ins
back, reverse the steps you took to remove them.
