reuse Windows XP?

I have an older laptop with windows xp pro installed that I am not going to
use any more. It came with a Windows XP Pro disk sp 1a. If I am
decomissioning that laptop what would I have to do, what is the process,
what do I have to do to remove and then reuse that Windows XP operating
system disk on a new machine? Can I somehow unregister and then install and
then reregister Windows XP on another machine?

Is the version of XP on the laptop retail or OEM? A retail version is
transferrable if it's first removed from the drive on which it's installed.
If it's OEM, by the license it's tied to the first computer on which it's
installed and can't be moved to another computer. It can be transferred if
the computer on which it's installed is sold with it.

If it's a retail copy then just format the old drive to remove it from
there, and then reinstall on another system. You don't have to do anything.
Activation will go through either on the internet or if needed you'll have
to make a phone call.

If it is retail, just install it on the new machine. You may have to phone
the free phone number and explain it to MS so they can sort you out with the
key.
Uninstall from laptop - place disc in disc tray and reboot. When you get to
the setup screen, choose to install then when it gives you the option of
creating and deleting partitions, delete the partitions listed. You can
create a new one and format it again just to help the next person if you are
passing the laptop on to someone.

If you are going to throw the laptop away, please consider donating it to a
local school or charity instead of landfill. These places are crying out
for some technology, especially smaller local charities.

You say the laptop came with XP Pro. That sounds like an OEM licensed
version of XP. That license cannot be transferred from the hardware it came
with to anything else.

have to buy a new copy. Where do I go for a legal fair price copy of XP?
I am not interested in going to Vista, does that make a difference on what
I will pay for a legal copy of XP?

Search online for the best prices. Look at newegg to start with.

I always recommend the Upgrade version over the Full version. If you don't
own a qualifying previous version, you can buy a used copy of Windows 98
very cheaper someplace like eBay. The combination of the XP Upgrade and
Windows 98 will still be considerably cheaper than the Full Retail version.
And, contrary to what many people think, the Upgrade version *can* be used
for a clean installation if you have that previous qualifying version.

And I always recommend *against* buying an OEM version, which is only
slightly less expensive than the Upgrade version, but comes with significant
restrictions.

Question: I have an old PC and a generic Windows 98 SE Plus! OEM disc. I
understand the XP OEMs are tied to one machine and that's that. However,
am I legally allowed to use the old 98SE OEM disc along with an XP
upgrade disc on a *new* PC?

I don't know for sure, and I've never thought about this before, so take
what I say with a grain of salt. But thinking about about it now, it would
seem to me to be a technical violation of the EULA

I'd be interested in hearing other people's views on this, though.
