Return from screen saver

I have just upgraded to Windows XP Home with service pack 2, and since this
upgrade whenever my machine comes back from the screen saver, programs that I
had running shutdown. Not all of them shutdown but at least the top program
and sometimes the next one inline.

Let's have the specs on the machine. You say you upgraded - what
operating system was on the machine before and what are the hardware
details?

You have an older, slower machine but it should run XP with no problem.
Here are a few things to check:

1. Make sure you have enough room left on the hard drive.
2. Make sure the machine is 100% virus/malware free since bad programs
take system resources.
3. Make sure your computer is not overheating.
4. You might want to run a memory test with something like Memtest86+
from www.memtest.org.
5. Look in Event Viewer for clues as to what is failing.
Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]
6. Swap out the power supply for a known-working one. Perhaps the one
you have is failing. You need a lot of power for the new Geforce video
cards.
