Retrieving Outlook messages saved to disk

B Miles

Okay, so I tried to be good. I saved my Outlook messages
to a CD (made the CD compatible). Now I'm trying to open
a saved message, and I get an error message, "Can't open
file. The file may not exist, you may not have
permission to open it, or it may be open by another
application," none of which is true. I think the problem
has something to do with saving my Outlook 2000 message
in Windows XP Home Edition. It's saving the messages
as .msg files, which I think my version of Outlook can't
read. Is there a fix for this?

Hi B Miles,

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a
(SR-1/SR-1a).

To obtain SR-1/SR-1a, click the article number below to view the article in
the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
245025 OFF2000: How to Obtain and Install Microsoft Office 2000 Service
Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a)

NOTE: The vCard fix was completed during the Office SR-1 release
development, but it is a separate fix and not part of the core SR-1 files.
The fix is available in the Q248120.exe file in the Support folder on the
SR-1 CD-ROM. The SR-1 download, by itself, does not include this specific
fix. To apply this fix, run the Q248120.exe file.

This fix is also included in the vCard Update for Office 2000 SR-1 that is
available on the Windows Update site and it is also included in Microsoft
Internet Explorer version 5.5. For additional information about how to
obtain Internet Explorer 5.5, click the article number below to view the
article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

A .msg file is not the best way to save messages. You're better off saving
copies of your entire PST file.

You can read the saved messages with our product OutlookExtract. It doesn't
need Outlook 2000 to be installed as it reads the msg files directly.
