retrieving messages suddenly very slow

using POP3 mail.charter.net

Windows Mail 6.0.6000.16386

In the past few days it has suddenly become very slow to retrieve messages.
The messages do eventually download, but instead of a second or two, the time
has multiplied to perhaps a minute for an email that includes only text, no
graphics or attachments. I tried clearing out the inbox, but that did not
change anything.

We are not having any other problems with connection speed in any other
applications: web pages load with the same speed as ever, etc.

Any suggestions?

Make sure your antivirus is not configured to scan emails.
Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

If no improvement after disabling email scanning, consider upgrading
to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad effects
from antivirus programs:
