Retrieving deleted internet explorer wallpaper (This is very trick

S

It's not deleted.
For the Display Properties Background tab, Windows XP
fetches the image files from the following locations:

BMP Files from %Systemroot% (WINDOWS folder)

BMP, JPG, GIF, JPE, DIB, PNG, HTM files from the following
locations:
%Systemroot%\Web\Wallpaper
%USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Pictures [& sub-folders]
%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
%ProgramFiles%\Plus!\Themes [& sub-folders]

Here is a link that discusses this.

when you right click, to set another image as background (in internet
explorer), that will replace the only bmp file in
%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
try that.
what I would like to know is that if there is anyway to retriecve this
replaced file?
Thanks,
Jon

With internet explorer, it is easy to change your wall paper. I carelessly
right click and set the background to another picture. The problem is that I
want the previous picture back. Is there anyway, I could retrieve that
picture. It is definately not in my recycle bin.

Now when I right click on the desktop, properties, desktop tag, the
interenet explorer is the new picture.

This is where the picture is stored when you set the background using
internet explorer.
C:\Documents and Settings\your_name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer
The system just deleted the old picture when you set another background.

I can't get that picture now.

I'm sure the file is still on your pc, but in a different
location, if you knew the name of the file you want, you
can do a search for it , or if you don't know the name of
the file just do a *.bmp as a search term, and click once
on the file it should show a smaller view of the file, so
you can be sure it's the right one.
Are you setting the desktop background??
I'm not currently using XP, so I can't try what your saying
with internet explorer, have to wait till I get home.

I didn't have much time to play with this, but at least
now I understand what your talking about.
I'm not sure where the pc stores these .bmp's
have you looked in documents?
I would do a wildcard search using windows explorer and
*.bmp click on each one and it should show up as a
thumbnail, preview.

Searched, believe that the file has been replaced.
when internet explorer set background, it also replace the previous file.
Just too bad that the previous file are not thrown into the recycle bin
first. I believe that the previous image has been deleted permanently.
I had even tried restoring to an earlier date.

Observe
%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
as you set background using internet explorer and you will see what happen.

I agree, what I found is this, windows calls the image
wallpaper.bmp and it's a temp file, whenever you choose
a new file to be used as a background it overwrites the
previous file with the same name.
if You want to be able to choose an image as background
and then choose a different one, while keeping the old one
on the pc, I suggest you download the image, and save it
in a special file, then when you choose it as background
image, windows can create the temp file, while keeping
the original in your downloaded folder, then you can
choose what you want, keeping a library of images.

thanks, I manage to retrieve the previous image using a data recovery
program. That's really exciting...
The image is found as a compressed and lost file.
