Do you have Adobe Acrobat 7 installed?

In order to save this information, you must save normal.dot with the
changes. In order to do that you must have control of normal.dot (e.g. if
this is a company machine some misguided IT departments think it fun to
replace normal.dot with a default version.). Set tools > options > save >
prompt to save normal.dot as a starting point.

Acrobat 7, as indicated by Suzanne, inhibits saving to normal.dot.

Are you using Word as an e-mail editor for Outlook? The differing
requirements for Word as e-mail editor and Word processor will result in
conflict between the two layouts. Use Outlook's own editor.
