i had to re-install windows xp pro on my laptop. All my programs are still
there but not all of them run (Office for example). The cleanest way of
fixing this would be to 'resurrect' a previous user from the previous xp
install.

Is there any way of doing this?

If not I will need to reinstall all of my software which will take days.

Its not clear from your post whether you undertook a repair installation of
winXp - for what reason? - or whether you installed a new instance of Winxp,
if the latter is the case you need to reinistall every thing

You say "had to" Why did you have to? It's almost always the wrong
response to a problem, and should be done only as a last resort when
nothing else works.

All my programs are still there

If so, then you did *not* reinstall Windows. Perhaps you did a repair
installation, which is very different from a re-installation.

So please explain exactly what you did, and how you did it.

Depends on the exact situation. If you mean that the userprofile doesn't have
the shortcuts, then yes, resurrecting an old profile would cure that.

If you mean you are trying to run progams from 'C:\Program Files' which
haven't been installed under this copy of Windows, then your mileage may vary
depending on whether the app has dependencies on other system components, or
is self-contained. (sometimes termed a 'nonportable' or 'portable' app)

Office, in particular, cannot be run like this. It must be reinstalled.
