Restricting concurrent users on Terminal Server

We need up to 20 PCs having the ability to use a TS session at times, but
for licensing reasons (on a non-Microsoft application), only want a certain
number logging on at a time, or at least only a certain number allowed to
use that application concurrently. This control is not possible within the
application, is it possible to restrict it somewhere within TS
configuration? I am a total TS newbie, just reading up at the moment, and
planning how it will work for us.

Many thanks for any ideas.

Just set ntfs security on the application folder for the
users who need access and remove the application from the
program group in the profile for user's who don't need
access to it.

Yes, that can be the simplest solution, if the application is only
used by a fixed group of users and they use the application all
the time. Then the number of licenses equals the number of users.
But there are many applications that have a concurrent licensing
scheme, i.e X users may use the application at the same time, but
the potential group of users contains many more persons. Then NTFS
permissions are not going to help you, they only set an upper
limit.

Thanks for your responses guys. I've just found out that there is no
concurrent licensing on this application after all, so it wouldn't help to
try and restrict usage - we'll need the max no. of licences for anyone who
will ever use it anyway!

Better get the cheque book out!

We have a solution for such a need. See:

http://www.autocloseidle.com

It's a software that lets you monitor database/accounting software clients
and close those who don't use the database software for a long time. It
shows the idle time per user and allows you to close any user at anytime; to
free a database session so others can log in. This ultimately allows you to
save on concurrent user's licenses.
