Restricted Site icon removed from Tools|Security

J

John Brainerd

System: Winxp Pro fully patched, using OneCare as primary security suite, IExplorer 7.0.5730.11 plus Spysweeper, AdAware, and Spybot as periodic cleaning tools and Google popup blocker.

The Restricted Site icon in IExplorer, and thus the ability to modify settings in that zone, has disappeared from Options|Tools|Security. The restricted sites are still in the registry but the icon is gone. The only change that I made before noticing this is to install Windows Desktop Search.

The Restricted Site function was not working --or at least working correctly -- before: I regularly get full page popups from www.allwindowssoft.com . It is on the restricted list and I run the anti-malware programs above on a regular basis.

ANY help would be appreciated

I am absolutely amazed that not one of the MS professionals who monitor this newsgroup has commented on my post. A major security tool within IE7 is not just NOT WORKING, but has DISAPPEARED. It seems to me that this would elicit at least a modicum of curiosity and comment. The fact that it happened almost immediately following the installation of the Windows Desktop Search program should generate at least a couple of replies, if only from the perpetual "I told you so" crowd. Curiouser and curiouser....

I have resinstalled IE7 but the Restricted Sites icon is still missing from the " Internet - Intranet - Trusted Sites - (blank)" selection box at Tools | Internet Options | Security Tab. Any ideas anyone?

I have the same problem John and have posted the following as a new entry in
microsoft.public.internetexplorer.security...

Owing to I don't know what, my Restricted Zone icon disappeared from the
selection window in "Internet Options"/"Security" (see a related post at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...-8EB7A22FC6A0&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us ) My circumstance is the same.

Running the MS Baseline Security Analyzer presents the following...

Some or all of the user settings for this zone are below the recommended
level...

Result Details

Restricted sites zone....
Score: RED X
Setting: Submit nonencrypted form data
Current: Enable
Recommended: Prompt

I only had 2 "Users" at the time this problem occured...the "Administrator"
account (accessed by Safe Mode) and a "User" account with administrator
privileges. The "Administrator" account Restricted security settings are
normal and accessible.

Uninstalling IE7 does not correct the problem as the Restricted Zone icon
and access to Restricted Zone settings remain unavailable to the "User"
account in IE6 as well.

Creating a 3rd "User" account without "administrator" priveleges provided
normal access to "Restricted" security settings.

Checking the registry while logged into the original "user", I found the
following 2 entries...note the DOS? "ÂÂÂÂÂÂ" characters in the "icon"
values...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones\4

CurrentLevel REG_DWORD 0x00012000 (73728)
Description REG_SZ This zone contains Web sites that
could potentially
damage your computer or
data.
DisplayName REG_SZ Restricted sites
Flags REG_DWORD 0x0000dc20 (56352)
Icon REG_SZ ÂÂÂÂÂÂ
LowIcon REG_SZ inetcpl.cpl#005426

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-436374069-854245398-1060284298-1010\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\4

LowIcon REG_SZ inetcpl.cpl#005426
PMDisplayName REG_SZ Restricted Sites [Protected Mode]

All other "Zone 4 Icon" values (there were 6 additional registry entries
that I could find using search word "Zones")...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones\4
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet

looked like the following...

Icon REG_SZ inetcpl.cpl#00004481

I am tempted to replace those ÂÂÂÂÂÂ entries with inetcpl.cpl#00004481...any
thoughts out there?

If not, I need to repair the IE installation somehow.

As to my problem, an uninstall/reinstall of IE7 has fixed the problem for
now and the Restricted Zone Icon and zone accessibility is back to normal.
However, I've done that before only to have the problem crop up again so I'll
continue to try to find the culprit (if there is one) but at a more leasurely
pace.

So, you had better luck than the OP? ; )

It probably would have been a good idea to have opened that value
so you could examine its actual value in hex. E.g. those characters
look like they might be Unicode (e.g. doublebyte characters)
with the low-order byte perhaps being just some bit combination
which can not be represented in 7-bit ASCII.

Did you try using the "Reset all zones to default level" button?

BTW since inetcpl.cpl was mentioned I tried

regsvr32 /n /i inetcpl.cpl

but that didn't affect any icon values. ; ]

DependencyWalker shows that there are some interesting possibilities
for alternate initialization routines, which might be accessible via the regsvr32
command, but I don't have an alternate partition set up to test them on.

If not, I need to repair the IE installation somehow.

Supposedly that is what RIES is designed to do. YMMV.
Note that the main negative effect which might be overlooked
by people thinking of it as the functionality of an old IE Repair
is that all your personalized information will be lost, in particular
any stored passwords you may have accumulated.
So, for dealing with that issue you might want to use PSPV
(from NirSoft) to export all AutoComplete data first.
