Restoring Vista from the installation DVD

I noticed that the Vista installation DVD has a repair function that allows
me to restore a previously created backup (image I presume?) of my PC.

This sounds like a good insurance policy for my PC.

So I wonder what program you use to create a backup that the installation
DVD can use to recover your PC? Is it simply the standard built-in backup
program (if there is one)? If so, are there any special settings I need to
use to ensure that the backup is compatible with the installation DVD
restore function?

Cheers.

Vista business & ultimate include a full backup imaging app which creates a
backup image of your entire hard disk onto CD/DVD/2nd disk, within windows.
You can restore this via the repair function when you boot from the dvd & it
works well.

Does the installation DVD restore function also work with third party apps
(such as Acronis Home)?

I've no idea but normally 3rd party apps would provide their own means of
restore.
