Thanks to Malke's response to a previous post, I was able to restore all user
accounts - including Administrator - in my XP Pro: Welcome
Screen/Ctrl-Alt-Del twice, etc. But when I restart, everything is gone and I
have to go thru the above steps again. How do I make the restoration
permanent???

And Melke ... as for you ... THANK YOU so very much for the above steps !!!!
I'm tempted to grab you by the ears and kiss you on the lips ... just
tempted, mind you. Thanks again, man!!!!!!!!!

No kisses are necessary, thanks. If when you restart everything is gone
again, then all I can guess at is:

1. Your computer is badly infected.

2. You have some third-party program that reverses any changes such as
Deep Freeze by Faronics. This is most unlikely in a home machine, but
since you didn't stay in your previous thread I have no idea what the
problem was or any of the details about your computer and/or your
original issue.

3. You have hardware problems.

There is absolutely no way for me to guess. I'd suggest at this point
you have a professional (not someone from your local version of
BigStoreUSA) take a look at it.

Sorry for the duplicate posts, but after clicking 'send', I got a msg stating
that a problem prevented message from being sent and I should try again
later. I logged on today again for that purpose only to find both posts on
the site. Anyway ...

I do have a home machine with XP Pro. My wife created her own user account,
but when she finished, my original Administrator account and picture
vanished. When I'd start up the computer, only her new account & picture
appeared at the Welcome screen and still does now. So each time, I do the
Ctrl/Alt/Del twice "dance" to get the original Administrator account up and
then I have access to my desktop etc.

Are there any steps I can take that will result in just the Administrator
account appearing in the Welcome window when the computer is turned on as it
did in the pre-wife-user-accountazoic period???

Again - many thanks for your help.

***Administrator is not made for working. Dont use it regularly.***

You can get the administrator icon back by downloading TweakUI (RECOMMENDED):
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

OR you can do this registry change :
1.Open Registry Editor If you don't know how, stay out.
2. Click on this key :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\
SpecialAccounts\UserList
3.Right side, Change the value of "Administrator" to 1

Don't modify the registry if you don't have backup.

Honestly, I don't remember the details of this thread. However, you
apparently were using the built-in Administrator account for your own
daily work. This is not A Good Thing. The built-in Administrator
account should be reserved for emergencies only. Since you have XP Pro,
it would be smart to create an account just for your daily work. If at
all possible, it is better to use user-level accounts and not accounts
with administrative privileges for daily work.

Apparently your wife's account is a computer administrator. When a
second account with administrative privileges is created, the built-in
Administrator account is hidden. This is by design. You can make the
built-in Administrator account show on the Welcome Screen but a better
solution would be to create another account for yourself. You can copy
the data and settings from the one you are using to the new one if you
like (after logging into the new account once).
