Restoring something that was on previous operating system

Hi.
I had Windows 98 when I lost everything. I thought I
could reinstall it. I hadn't backed everything up.
Wound up not being able to reinstall it and decided to
upgrade to xp. Since then we had to add more memory to
the computer too.
I was wondering if there was any way to recover files
from the computer. If I do a search, I can't can't find
the music files I'm looking for, but when I did a search
for Windows 98 it came up. I just don't know where or
how to see if my old files can be in there or if it's
just the Windows 98 program itself that is coming up. Is
there a way to find exactally what's still on the
computer? Or more important a way to find things
previously on the hard drive?
I don't have a lot of computer knowledge or expertise. I
can follow directions though.
If anyone takes the time to reply, thank you. Since I'm
not sure how this message help works, I hope I'll get the
response.
Thanks.

What do you mean by lost everything? If that implies you
had to reformat the drive and do a new install, then
everything is gone.

Thanks for answering. I had apparently deleted a
component to Windows 98 when I deleted a file sharing
program. So I went to reinstall it from my disk that I
got with the computer. The problem was the disk was
corrupt. Wouldn't reinstall right. I decided since I
needed a new o/s I would go to xp. Only had 64mb of ram
at the time and xp wasn't working too good either. I
hadn't lost everything at that point. My files were
still on the computer. I did a back up but didn't know
what I was doing and only partially backed stuff up. I
believe that the computer may have been reformatted, not
sure. I don't know if that would have to happen to add
memory. I had both hard memory and ram added.
All my programs were wiped out, but, as I mentioned if I
look for Windows 98 in the search option on my xp, it
comes up as disabled. So, it's still sort of "there". I
was wondering if the Windows 98 is there, would the
information that was contained in it be there?
