Restoring my sound and audio

I have a new computer and was trying to work with a microphone installed, I
went into the sound and audio on my control panel, and thought I was doing
good, now i have lost my sound when I transfer from my digital camera, i can
hear the sound when it is transfering to a file, then when I burnt it onto a
dvd and played it; there was no sound, and the microphone I want to add won't
pick up a sound, as I am new to windows xp I dont know how to restore the
mess I have done!!!!!!!!!
