Restoring Ghost image from a different PC

I know that strictly speaking its not wise to do this but in the past
I've got this to work by changing the IDE driver etc on the original
machine to the generic microsoft one. Then when I restore to slightly
different hardwaqre it boots and then loads the correct driver.

However. got two laptops, both panasonic, and this is not working.
Getting innaccessible boot device after ghost restore.

Is there any way to fix this? Boot from Windows 2000 pro cd and repair?

A repair installation *might* fix it. If not then using Acronis DriveImage
with Universal Restore will.

Or use Paragon's Drive Backup with Adaptive Restore (not normally free).
You will need the original Windows 2000 install CD though supposedly.
And unlike Windows Repair mode, you don't lose Service Packs and
updates.

Is Acronis DriveImage the same as Acronis TrueImage?

Universal Restore - how does that work?

==============

It works by going through a full hardware detection process on the first
boot-up.

You will be taken it back to the build number of the installation disc.
Which depending on your disc, could be the original release of Windows
2000 back in 1999.

Hmm. This wouldnt be good because its got service packs, and patches
applied. Also, we do a degree of security clampdown too. Would a
windows repair change some of the policy/registry values back to
default?

Yes indeed it does. You could slipstream a more updated Windows install
CD with nLite, but that only helps your problem partially.

And I'd lose all the windows clampdown stuff.

Looking at Acronis true image now because thats got an option to allow
restore to different hardware (whihc ghost hasnt).
