Restoring backup ?

J

Jim Matthews

When I first got my XP Pro laptop, I partitioned it to allow me to dual boot
with Windows 2000. I set up, using Partition magic, a C: drive and D: drive.

I went along using both drives, under XP and backed them up each week using
the supplied Backup tool (creating a .bkf on an external hard drive)

Now, I have had to reformat and reinstall, and am back to a single hard
drive - C:

But when I try to set up a restore of files that were backed up from D: - it
tells me the drive does not exist, and the backup cannot be restored.

Certainly, there has to be a way to restore to another location, other than
the original ?

Thanks in advance for any help

It (Backup) defaults to the original disk/partition for it's destination.
You have to use Advanced features to restore to an alternate location.

You should have kept a D partition when you reformatted and reinstalled.
Unlike disk imaging tools, ntbackup will not be able to create a D partition
for you. Your best bet is to use Partition Magic to recreate a D
partition - it should be able to do this non-destructively but another
backup first is always advisable. Then you should be able to use ntbackup
to restore. Hopefully your back up included the System State.

There may be issues with the dual boot configuration though depending on how
you had set this up.
