Restoring Backup with XP when performed on 98

I backed up my system using the backup function in Windows 98 2nd edition. My system crashed and had to get a new computer.
I am now running XP Home Edition. How can I restore some of these files that I have backed up with 98. I cannot find the backup function in XP.

Thanks in advance
Darrell

Darrell,
By default, the XP Backup Function is not installed in XP Home. The program
is "NTBACKUP" and you can install it off your system CD. The instructions
are here and you can also download it if you wish:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/windowsxp_tips.htm#backup_home .
When you get there, scroll down to: Installing the Backup Program on the
Home Version

Hi Darrell,

The backup program is in the \valueadd folder on the CD. However, this will
not help you as it will not recognize the compression used in the .qic
format from the Win98 utility. You will need to recover the files in a Win98
system, or use a third-party program that recognizes the .qic format.

The backup program that comes with XP Pro is not installed on Home,
though you can find it on a retail CD. It is one brought forward from
NT, and is tape oriented and will not work properly with CDs. But more
to the point, it is *not* compatible with your Win98 backups

If you used NTBackup from within XP, then you can't restore in DOS.
In fact, you can't do anything for XP in DOS because XP doesn't use
DOS.

Not quite. Although it's true that there's no MS-DOS within
Windows XP, and you can't boot to DOS from XP, you *can* boot to
a DOS diskette. And if your hard drive is FAT32, from that DOS
diskette boot, you can create, modify, or delete data files.

True, if your drive if NTFS, and you boot to a DOS diskette, you
can't do anything with the files there. However there are
third-party programs such as NTFSDOS that will let you read NTFS
files from a DOS boot, and (if you get the paid version) also
write to them.
