I accidently tried to open a document from word with notepad, and now the
document opens read only, and I want words. How do I restore the original
word document so it opens correctly.

Opening a document with notepad will not make any difference to the file -
unless you were foolish enough to save it from Notepad. Then the only way to
recover it would be to re-type it.
If you can open the file and it otherwise looks OK, close Word and check the
file properties from Windows Explorer to see if the read-only attribute has
been set.
Check there are no lock files still open in the document folder (see
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm )
or open again and save the document with a new name.
