Do you dual-boot with XP? If so, this is a known issue. Use a boot
manager to hide each operating system from the other one. Otherwise,
look at MVP Bert Kinney's information about System Restore:

when i installed Vista a few months ago i installed it onto a seperate hard
drive and as a result I landed up with "dual boot" [not by choice} I was
thinking of reformating my drive containing Xp but was told that if i did
that I would not be able to boot into vista. what boot manger do you suggest
and how do i go about doing it?
Thanks

I don't dual-boot XP and Vista so can't give you any personal
recommendations. Here are links discussing the issue:

Dual Booting Windows Vista & Windows XP -
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/dualboot.html

Install Windows XP On A Machine Already Running Windows Vista (MVP John
Barnett) - You're not doing this but Mr. Barnett's page discusses using
VistaBootPro, which may be easier for you to use than BootIT NG,

Acronis also makes a boot manager, Disk Director.

I have the same problem as Julsie with the very important distinction that I
have only Vista Ultimate installed thus it is a single boot system. The lack
of the OS not saving restore points will likely lead to my having to do an
upgrade install as I'm running into numerous Vista-related problems.
