I'm concerned if my computer is damaged beyond repair or stolen.

I'm not concerned about anyone accessing the data on the old computer, I am concerned about how I easily can continue business with the new one.

I have norton ghost but this will put my old operating system on the new pc.

What if new pc has a different operating system (ie say XP Pro & old PC had XP Home) anf i want to keep it?

You're not concerned about the data or the os...so what is it you want to
do? Do you have this "new" system yet, or would you get it after the old one
melts down or gets stolen?

You're going to need to reinstall the programs you use. Keep them handy.
Otherwise a new system should just plug in and run.
