Restore screen rotation for 82852 82855 GM/GME graphics controller

Hi,

I recently found that I cannot rotate my laptop screen anymore after I
reinstalled WinXP on a new hard drive. My laptop is over 3 years old.
It is not a tablet PC, but I remember I was able to rotate screen from
Control Panel -> Display -> Settings before I reinstalled WinXP. I
don't know what I missed in the reinstallation. The graphics
controller otherwise works just as usual. So I am wondering how I can
restore this function for my laptop that uses Intel 82852 82855 GM/GME
graphics controller? Any help is appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Paul.

Screen rotation is a function of the graphics display driver.
Update/reinstall the display driver.

Thank you for this information. This may be what I have missed. But
how do I update/reinstall the display driver? Where can I find the
installed display driver? I click Control Panel -> Display -> Settings
-> Advanced, then choose Monitor tab -> Properties -> Driver. It shows

Digital Flat Panel (1024x768)
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Date: 6/6/2001
Driver Version: 5.1.2001.0
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Publisher

Is this the display driver to be updated/reinstalled? Thanks.

Paul.

You get the display driver either from a CD that came with your system, or
go to the graphics card manufacturer's web site if it's a retail card, the
computer OEM web site if it's a large OEM like Dell or HP, or to the
motherboard manufacturer's web site if it's an onboard graphics device.
Download the most recent driver, and read the instructions on how to update
to the drive. Each manufacturer can have different way to do it.

My laptop is a Gateway laptop, and I have CDs that came with the
laptop. The CDs include a WinXP CD, an Applications and Drivers CD and
a few other CDs. When I reinstalled WinXP, I basically installed
everything that I was instructed to do from the CDs. I clicked Update
Driver buttons in Both Adapter and Monitor's Properties in Control
Panel -> Display -> Settings -> Advanced, both shows "The Wizard could
not find a better match for your hardware than the software you
currently have installed". Unless I am in wrong places, I don't know
what else I can do.

I suggest you contact Gateway tech support then. I don't know why, if you
installed the current driver for the graphics chip that you don't get the
same features. You could also manually look on the Gateway site for the
drivers for your laptop. Another option is to uninstall the graphics driver
from device manager, reboot, and reinstall from the drivers CD.

No, this is the monitor driver. The display driver is found with all the other
system drivers at Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager
-> Display Adapters -> Intel(R) 82852/52855 GM -> Properties -> Driver.
The latest Intel driver can be found in the Intel Download Center, using
the link provided in another post in this thread.

Thank you Bob for your suggestion. It convinced me to download the
update from Intel web site and installed. Now I have the rotation
function back. Thanks a lot.

That is the correct course of action. Don't bother with the Gateway
website if you want the latest drivers -- Gateway doesn't provide those.
Gateway only provides the most recent drivers they themselves have
tested, which could be several months if not years old. Those drivers
will be pretty stable though, but not very exciting. Even though
Gateway's drivers are from the manufacturer of the part (in this case
it's Intel's display drivers), you will invariably find much newer
versions of the drivers from the part manufacturer itself.
