Restore Points Gone

I just installed today's Vista updates and later noticed all my restore
points prior to the update are gone.
Is this everyone's experience, or did I do something to accidently delete
them?

It's not really a problem, as I just finished a reinstall and had a clean
and stable config before the update, but I'm curious as to why the restore
pointd disappeared.

Thanks

Did you install service pack 2? This would cause the previous restore points
to be eliminated as they are of no use after SP2 has been installed. If they
were there, and you tried to use them, you would have huge problems.

Adding to Shawn's answer. Norton is another culprit. Do you have Norton installed

SP2 install will remove restore points.

It might be that Microsoft feels restoring to a previous restore point over
SP2 would cause more problems.

I suspect restoring to a previous points over regular updates could
potentially cause problems, too.

Thanks for the suggestions, but none of the above (below)

I already had SP 2.
I don't dual boot.
There is plenty of space for shadow copies/restore points
I forgot to mention I'm using Vista64. I don't know if that's relevant.

Maybe it's something I did, but I sure don't remember deleting restore
points.
Like I said -no biggie, but it surprised me to see them gone.

Yeah, I've used that option before, but I haven't intentionally used it
recently. Maybe I did it in my sleep... ;-)
Anyway, it looks like it was NOT done by the MS update, or everyone else
would be experiencing it.
I'll just have to keep an eye on my restore points after the next update and
see what happens.

When I installed SP2 on my machine, the same thing happened so I
assumed that it was "normal".

This past weekend I visited a friend who only has dialup, so I took
the full SP2 download with me and installed it.

No loss of restore points.

Both of us have Home Basic. My system is set to only use 5GB of disk
space for System Restore. His was set to use the standard percentage
of his disk space.

I attribute the difference between our two machines to that.

Interesting point. I was going to post in direct reply to the OP, and
reference the other repliers, until I read your remark about the
allocation.

1. I have installed SP2 directly from the Microsoft Update program, not by
downloading & running the image.

2. I similarly installed a bunch of updates today (mostly security
related).

3. I checked my Restore Point list a few days ago, after reading, on this
NG, similar remarks about SP2 and other updates removing RPs, and the list
was full; however, it seemed prudent to recheck, which I just did. At this
moment, I have ~28 Restore Points listed, going back as far as 15:13:31
PDT, April 29, 2009.

Similarly to your friend, I have not changed the default allocation for
Restore Points.

Unlike you and your friend, I'm running Vista Home Premium x64.
