Restore points created by WD

L

Leo

Yes I do.

I just ran another scan before posting this to confirm no restore
points.

Perhaps a uninstall and reinstall might fix the problem you are
having.

L

Leo

No, system restore is turned on a typically creates one system
checkpoint every day or two.

Yes, real time protection is enabled.

The only difference between my installation and yours may be that
I never had Beta 1 installed. Could it be something from Beta 1
(if you had it installed) remained on your machine and is causing
these restore points?

I never had MSAS beta 1 installed on my PC, and Windows Defender was
creating 5-6 checkpoints every day. Until I uninstalled it two days ago.

I am at a loss as to why some MSAS installations create multiple
restore points and some do not. Perhaps someone more
knowledgeable than me will pipe up with a suggestion.

Hi Leo,

I don't have the problem either, but only because I don't use RTP(by choice), but I notice if
I turn it on Restore Points are made. I don't think Beta 1 has any bearing one the problem,
I uninstalled Beta 1 and purged the Registry of all orphaned Registry entries left behind
by the uninstall before installing Beta 2.

Your experience seems to show that this is not a universal problem with the latest version.
You do have the latest version 1.1.1347.0 installed don't you?

Yes, I sure do have the latest version installed and I use RTP
too.

MSAS is operating on my machine as advertised including
downloading updates without any problem.

I also have SpyWareBlaster installed and running.

I normally hate 'me too' posts, but in this case, I am using version
1.1.1347.0 of Defender with RTP enabled and I am not getting any Defender
Restore Points. I only get either a System Checkpoint or Software
Distribution Service 2.0 typically one or two at most each day.

I'm also running Windows OneCare on the same laptop, but don't see why that
would matter. I'm not seeing the reason for the difference at this point
myself. I am using Automatic Updates, are all of you?

I'm assuming you mean 'Windows Defender' and not 'Microsoft
AntiSpyware' (MSAS)?

Restore Point is a "Generic Term" for any point which will appear as a
defined restoration point in your daily log.
For example each day on booting computer I find a "Defender Check Point"
During the day they multiply like "rabbits".
Distribution Service 2.0 only occurs on days with updates to the Beta.
IT IS A PAIN IN THE ARSE!!!

Yes, I know. My point was to let you know that like Leo, assuming he means
Defender, I receive no Windows Defender labeled restoration points. I
especially don't receive several a day, only one or at most two.

This means that those with this situation may be somewhat unique, since not
everyone is having it occur. It also doesn't appear to simply relate to
Real-time Protection, so those with it will have to investige further.

The Defender (Antimalware) Team can't fix it if they can't reproduce it.

the only solution to this problem i now is to trun off the real-time
protection from defender and only use it as on-demand scanner.

but youre protection is also lesser , but that shut be no problem if you use
a good alround antivirus.

Have you tested to see if there is only one Security Agent causing the
restore points or you must disable all of them to stop the problem?

Maybe all of you have another Active mode, Real-time security application
running that interacts with Defender's Real-time protection, triggering the
restore points?

I noticed someone saying that the restore points occured when the PC started
and also when a Defender scan ended. Is this what all of you are seeing?

Well
I'm really new to this stuff;and it is happening on my computer too!
Defender is generating checkpoints in System Restore labelled as "Defender
Checkpoint". And it is occurring since the new Definition update
v.1.14.1402.2 More than 1 or 2 since then;more like 5 Already today 5
checkpoints and it's still morning where I live.

And in response to "Bitman"; it seems to me-even being a "newbie" to this
stuff;if people are reporting it on more than a very few pc's;then it's more
than a "unique" issue.

Well so far today I have had three uncalled for Defender restore points
created. The first appeared a switch on. The second some 3 hours later at
least 3/4 of an hour after Defender's daily scan so probably not related to
that event. The third in mid afternoon and again not related to anything
that I know of. Selecting any of them give the message " Windows Defender
checkpoint. Restores your computer to the point before this program was
removed" As I have not removed it YET this message cannot be true.
I was hoping that someone who really knows what is going on would come up
with an explanation and a simple means of fixing the problem. Otherwise I
will have to leave this Beta Test because I do in fact use System restore
points from time to time and I certainly do not want earlier ones crowded
out by these Spurious Defender checkpoints.

no i have not tested all different agents , and yes there is a interaction
between real-time protection from defender and norton 2006
but microsoft is investigating so well have to wait...

Yep, excuse my use of old terminology. That seems to happen as
you get older.
