restarting

OK, I don't even know where to begin. Everything was fine a week ago, and
now it's gone bonkers. I bought a DVD burner, installed it and everything
was fine. I burned a couple of disks; things worked. Then one day it
stopped in the middle of a disk and has not worked since. I keep getting an
error message like "can not read device because of I/O error". In the
process of trying to make it work, I took it out and put it back in, just as
I had before. About the same time, I was having trouble with my EZ
antivirus. I was told to run winsock, which I did. Now my computer keeps
restarting, sometimes right when I start the computer. The long story is
because I do not know what caused the problem. I have checked, and the
auto-restart on critical errors is not enabled in windows xp. Could some
one help me, or direct me to possible solutions to my problem:

1. Why is my computer restarting for no apparent reason?
2. Why can't I get my DVD player to work?

your dvd player is probably causing your PC to reboot for no apparent reason.
Try unpluging your drive and see how your PC reacks to it. Why your DVD
player isn't working? you might want to reinstall the software that came with
it or since your PC is rebooting and your drive isn't working, you might want
to take your drive back to where you bought it from and get a new one. It
might be defective and that is also causing your PC to reboot.

I unplugged the DVD and have had the same troubles with restart. I am
taking the anti-virus out and trying to restore back before this happened.
I bought the DVD online three months ago and the return policy expired after
30 days.

Hi Joker,

The rebooting is most likely caused by a bad driver since you stated it
didn't do this until you added new hardware. To determine what driver is
causing the problem I need you to enable driver verifier.
Steps:
1) Windows Key + R
2) Type in 'verifier' and hit enter
3) Make sure 'Create Standard Setting' is selected and hit next
4) Click on 'Select all drivers installed on this computer' and hit Finish
5) Reboot

There is a possibility that your computer will crash on reboot. If this
occurs hit F8 when rebooting just before the windows logo screen and select
the safe mode boot option. Follow the same steps above but on step 4 choose
'Select driver names from a list'; hit next; check the box next to any
driver where the provider is not Microsoft; hit Finish; reboot.

This will slow the performance of you computer a little while enabled but
will hopefully catch the driver causing corruption. Next time you crash
the blue screen will hopefully say something like
"DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION". If this occurs please send the
corresponding minidump (by default it is at c:\windows\Minidump ) my way.
If you have any questions or I didn't explain something well enough don't
hesitate to e-mail me (remove the "online" portion of my email address)
back. Good Luck,

After going through the procedure you mentioned, I did find a driver that
has caused problems in the past. I had removed it, but in the process of
all this I have restored my system and it came back. I took it out again
and that seems to have worked. The rebooting problem seems to have stopped.
So, how are you with DVD players. The second problem I have encountered is
just gettingthat to work again. I have taken off all the software that was
associated with it and unplugged it. I was going to try and plug it all
back up as if I had just receieved it. Does the verifier help identify
problems with I/O errors?
