Resolve MAC address to IP address

I need to resolve a MAC address to an IP address. I
thought this could be done with the ARP command but was
unsuccessful in my attempts. Anyone have any ideas?

ping the address and then dump the arp cache.

Of course you can only arp for something on the local subnet.
