After you restart my computer, the display settings just
revert to a 640 x 480 resolution with 16 colors. why?
 
You have got good graphics card drivers installed???

The default resolution for XP is 800x600x65536. If you are only able to get 16
colors, then there is a problem with the video drivers.

Have you tried to uninstall/reboot/reinstall them?
