Resolution problem at startup when monitor is off

Whenever I start windows and my monitor is still off, when I power on the
monitor, the resolution will be set to a very low setting. It doesn't happen
when the monitor is on prior to starting windows. Same thing happen if the
screen saver starts and the monitor is off at that time. If I move the mouse
or type on the keyboard before powering on the monitor, the display settings
goes way back to crappy.

I have re-installed my monitor's drivers along with the video card drivers
and it still won't work properly. Is there anything that can be done to avoid
this? I hate having to set the resolution 100 times a day.

Since you haven't told us how old and what type of monitor you have, I
can only guess that the monitor is on its last legs and/or the cable
between it and the computer is not making a great connection. Either
work around the issue by turning the monitor on first (a good practice
anyway) or troubleshoot by connecting the pc to a different monitor. If
the pc behaves perfectly, then you know the original monitor is iffy.
If the pc behaves the same flaky way, then you know the video card is
iffy. You can then replace hardware accordingly.

Unless you leave the monitor on the software can't tell what is at the
other end of the cable and sets the resolution to something that won't
ruin the monitor. Since you know that turning the monitor on BEFORE
turning the computer on will prevent this "problem", you have your
solution and can avoid the problem.
