resizing gif or jpg for webpage?

S

Susan

I am sent calendar created as a Word document. I have successfully converted
it to a tiff image. I am wanting to put this on web page in FrontPage 2003.
I converted the tiff to jpg or gif format using Picture It or Adobe PE, etc.
It is in black & white. The jpg or tiff is bigger than I want it so I want
to resize it. If I don't resize it, people would have to scroll up and down
to view it on page.

This is where my problem lies. If I drag the handles and reduce it within
FP, I lose the lines dividing the days of the week. I lose vertical lines,
horizontal lines, or both depending on how much I drag. How do I overcome
this?

Any suggestions please?
Susan

Susan do not use Microsoft Word!
Microsoft Word was not designed for pictures, it reduces the quality of them
automatically so it will make your problem worse!
Have you tried viewing your published page on the web when you resize the
picture, it might appear that the lines were there but weren't shown on
Frontpage because of resolution problems.
If not then try resizing using Publisher, it is a lot better for handling
pictures.

Resizing images in Frontpage gives you limited control - resize the image within
Photo Elements or whatever you're using - and resave the image within that image
editor.

If the image is too small, no one will be able to read it. If people need to
scroll down the screen, that's unavoidable, and probably necessary.

Perhaps it would be better to export the calendar (the Word version you say you
received) as a PDF file - MS Word can do this with the aid of either the full
Adobe Acrobat product or there are other conversion tools around for free that
might put water marks or links in the resulting PDF pages until you pay for the
product (in my experience anyway however I now use Acrobat itself for PDF docs).

Thanks, Adobe people told me to resize it but some lines still disappear. I
don't create the calendar and I don't have the option to resize it.

I thought you were supposed to be able to shrink large photo but not enlarge
it with problems with degradation, but there is slight degradation. I once
again have learned much.

I think my best approach will be to go next door and get reduced paper copy
and scan it as jpg and put it in FP.

Every time you manipulate then save a jpg you lose quality...it's a lossy format. You should adjust your image in a lossless format until you're happy with it...then the last thing you do is convert it to a jpg.
