Resizing and cropping in Paint

D

I just switched from WebTV to a computer about 3 weeks ago, and I am a
complete beginner at using Paint. Could someone tell me how to resize
and crop images? I don't see any icons to click on that say "resize "
or "crop".

I hope I don't look like a complete idiot--as I said I'm a complete
beginner. I actually spent about 3 hours downloading GIMP because I
thought I might be able to use it for resizing and cropping, and it
looks very much like paint.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Nothing wrong being a beginner!
Paint is very old software and not very good.

For cropping and resizing etc. download the free software at:
www.faststone.org
You download the file Image Viewer 2.9 in a folder on your hard drive and
double click on the file to install the software. You then start the
software and open the folder where your photos are. Much easier to use than
Paint and a lot more tools available for photos.

If you want to crop with Paint.
Open your photo file in Paint
Click on the rectangle at the top of the tool bar
Click with your mouse where you want to start the crop and drag the mouse
down and to the right to cover the area you want. If you miss it, click on
Edit and Undo and start again.
Right click within your selected crop area.
Click on Copy. This make a copy of the cropped area and stores it in your
clipboard.
Click on File, New. You will get a message asking if you want to save the
change, answer NO and a white page will open.
Click on Edit and Paste. Your cropped area will be displayed, click outside
of it to display the content of the area. You can now save this as a new
file.

Do not try to resize with Paint.
If you need to resize, use the following:

Image Resizing

To decrease the size of the file for e-mail, web publishing, etc.

Go to this site and download the free Image Resizer. Exe file in one of your
folder.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Once in your folder, double click on it to install it.

Once installed, you right click on a photo file (or on a group of selected
photo files).

Click on Resize image on the opening menu.

A window will open, select the size you want.

New files will be added in your folder, same name as original file but with
the word (small) or (custom) added.

The first time you use it, you may not see Resize image on the opening menu
after you right click on a photo file or if you see it and click on it, it
may not work. If so, do the following:

Click on Run, click on Start and type the following in the textbox:

REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL

and press the Enter key.

Note that there is a space between ...32 and SHI.

You should get a "success" message after pressing the Enter key.

Also, you can download a free photo editing software from here to resize
pictures and edit photos:

http://irfanview.com/

or another free software:

www.faststone.org

From this last one, you can directly e-mail a picture and it will
automatically resize it.

Another free one to do the same is:

www.picasa.com

Picasa has a nice feature to exchange pictures with friends under "Hello"

Thanks for the help! I plan to download and try what you've both
suggested.

I was able to resize images with GIMP, but now the file type for all
the pictures in My Pictures is GIMP. Is there any way to change them
back to the original file types?

You can change the file association any time you want. When you installed
GIMP it probably asked if you wanted to associate your image with GIMP. Easy
to change.
Right click on one of your photo.
Click on Open with on the opening menu.
Click on Choose Program at the bottom of the opening list.
Click on Windows Pictures and Fax Viewer on the opening list and check the
box "Always...."
