cropping in Microsoft Paint

I'm trying to crop an image with Paint and am having some difficulty.
I select the area I'd like to copy, hit Ctrl + C, and then go to File -
New. Problem is, doing this creates a new 512x384 image. The area
I've copied is smaller than 512x384.

Lots of webpages have 1x1 spacer images, so I downloaded one of those
and tried to copy / paste over that. The image is resized to the
dimensions I want, but it retains the palette of the original image.
In the case of those 1x1 spacer images, that means by full color image
is now monochrome.

My options appear to me to be as follows:

1. I can try to find other images, online, that posses a larger
palette yet are smaller than the one I'm trying to copy / paste.

2. Use another program. I've used Photoshop, in the past, but would
need to buy a new copy for this particular computer. And for the
purposes of cropping, this seems excessive.

Is there another option or have I pretty much covered them all?

Try this freeware program.

Use <Image> <attributes> to set the new image size to smaller than you want,
then paste your picture.
Alternatively, if you want the middle out of the picture, rotate the image
180, and note the pixel location that you want for the new top left (now
bottom right!), and set 'Image Attribute' to this value.
Then rotate the picture again by 180 and repeat Image attribute for the
bottom right corner that you want.
You will find that if you save a small picture (e.g. 16 x 16) when you next
open paint it will open a new image at this size.
