Resetting Outlook Express as email client in Windows XP

I accidently started to load an old version of Microsoft Outlook the other day.
I realised the mistake and cancelled the load.
Since this point in time, Windows XP does not recognise Outlook Express as a
valid email client, even though Outlook Express is functioning normally when
started explicitly.

This is causing a problem because some programs are attempting to connect to
email and cannot find a program.

I have tried to find an article explaining how to reinstall Outlook Express,
but 'How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in
Windows XP' does not explain how to do just this in for SP2.

I am comfortable making registry changes if that is necessary, but I do not
know what to correct.

Any ideas?

You will need to set OE as the default email handler.

IE\Properties\Programs\Email\Outlook Express

Thanks for that Ayush

First and Second options do not work because there are no email choices
available.

On the third option, the make default button appears to do something, but
when I return to try the first two options, there is still no email choice.

Any further ideas welcome.

Email choices or Outlook express ?

On the third option, the make default button appears to do something, but

try running : sfc /scannow from Start > Run then Follow the steps.

Or :
Control Panel > Folder Options
File Types
URL : mailto protocol
Click Advanced
Edit open option
Change the Application field to :
"%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /mailurl:%1

Thanks Peter, but as you will see from my replies to Ayush, that OE is not
being offered as an option.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/defaultl.htm

Go to Start | Run and type this command, with the double quotes and spaces:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg

and then make sure that OE is selected as the default mail program in both
IE and OE.

If that isn't enough, see this article:
"Send To" and E-mail Links Do Not Work Using Outlook Express as Default:
