Reserving a drive number for removable media ?

We have an HP Pavilion with a special bay for a removable hard drive. When
inserted, the drive engages a rear USB 2.0 Plug'n'Play connector. When the
drive is inserted the next available drive letter is automatically assigned
to the removable drive. How can we reserve a drive letter, and associate it
with this specific bult-in USB port, so that the removable drive will always
have the same drive letter when inserted, regardless of what other USB
removable devices ( flash thumbdrives, external hard drives, etc) are
currently connected to the computer?

I have a USB external drive, a WD 120 gig, and I want it to be the R drive
for historical purposes.

What I did was to get into control panel /administrative tools / computer
management / storage / disk management.

That snap in seems to allow reassigning letters to drives. Windows
remembers to make that drive R when I plug it in.

Thank you for the reply, stand_58. Are you saying that once you assign the
drive letter to that device, the letter will only be used when that SPECIFIC
device is plugged into that bay? Is this also true if the device is
connected to a USB port? What if the USB bay is NOT listed as a drive in
the manager list, as is the case here?

Thanks

There is no build in mechanism for that. My USB drive
letter manager can do it:

Max, I don't know the answers to your question. I'd have to pop a different
drive in and see if the computer is so dopey as to call that one the R
drive. My sense is that it wouldn't do that, but it's just a guess. I'm
pleasantly surprised that the letter assignment persists through most every
situation I've tried with this drive (and without) and with whatever writes
I have done on it elsewhere.
