Resequence Hard Drive Connections

T

The Toyman

I need to resequence an existing hard drive setup for a friend. He added a
160GB Seagate (SG) to supplement a 13GB Western Digital Caviar (WD). The
Seagate is jumpered as a master - shows up in the BIOS as Primary master
(plugged into IDE1 connector). The Western Dig. is jumpered as a single
drive (only drive in the box), and shows up in the BIOS as a Secondary
master. I think it's showing as Secondary master because it was plugged
into IDE2 connector on a separate cable. I'll change that to have both on
the same cable going to IDE1. Boot files were copied from the WD to the SG,
and the system boots from the SG.

All programs are on the WD, but the Registry thinks they're still on the
boot drive (the SG) At least programs won't run from the Start button -
will run OK from the executable file. To try to hopefully 'fix' things, I
hope to:

1. unplug the SG (pull the power & data cable) so the PC sees the WD as
the boot drive
2. boot the PC
3. install XP, SP 2 (so the machine will see all avail. space on the
SG). Have it on CD from MS. SP 1 has not been installed.
4. plug in the SG and jumper it as slave, and jumper the WD as master
5. boot the PC
6. run Partition Magic (PM) and use the 'copy' function to copy
(mirror?) all files from the WD to the SG.
7. Rejumper the SG as master, and the WD as slave
8. Cross my fingers, boot the beast, and hope it works.

Here's a major problem: The XP Pro O/S disk is lost, so if I need to re-do
the O/S, I'm up the proverbial 'crick' without the proverbial paddle.

Here's some questions:

1. I've heard from others who have tried to install SP 2, that it
could: 1) lock/freeze the O/S, necessitating an O/S reinstall; 2) the O/S
disk must be inserted to verify it's a legitimate copy before SP 2 will
install. Having no O/S disk will put me up that 'crick'. Any thoughts
here?

2. After I do #'s 1 & 2 above (unplug the SG & boot the PC), is there
anything I need to do in the BIOS or Windows - e.g. remove the SG from the
BIOS, or will that happen automatically? And how about Windows?

3. I assume plugging in the SG (#4 & 5 above) will simply be a case of
'follow the instructions', which I have.

4. Also, when reinstalling the SG, should I format & partition it, or
leave it alone, since it's formatted, partitioned and in use now?

5. I've tried running PM from the boot floppy & CD, but keep getting an
error message about 'the hard disks are recognized, and the appropriate
software is installed, but hasn't been activated' (not the exact words, but
close). Then it goes back to a DOS prompt. Since the WD wasn't on the same
cable as the SG, nor jumpered as a slave, I'm hoping that
recabling/rejumpering it will 'fix' this problem. If not, then I guess I'll
be back for more help. Comments here would be appreciated.

Here's another thought re PM: I've never used PM for this purpose before
(have Norton Ghost, but have never used it and know nothing about it). I'm
assuming that the drive with all of the programs (the WD) needs to be the
boot drive (maybe not?). I wonder if it's possible to copy all files from
the WD to the SG, with the SG as the boot drive & the WD as the slave. Then
I could simply try to install SP 2 onto the SG, and if successful, use PM to
copy all files from the WD to the SG. That's if I can get past the boot,
error message.

This entire operation should be pretty straight-forward, but since I don't
have experience, don't know how to respond to the PM error messages, and
especially since I don't have an XP Pro O/S disk, I'm reluctant to 'damn the
torpedoes, full speed ahead'.

Comments, observations & opinions are welcome, particularly if you have
experience with some or all of this.

I've been to the 'windowsxp.newusers' group - it was suggested I come here.

You and your friend have gotten into a real mess, eh..

OK.. first, without an XP CD, you are indeed up a creek with any kind of
paddle if anything more goes wrong..

A summary from what I understand..

The WD 13gb drive has all of the programs on it, including the OS.. that's
it..

Attach the WD 13gb drive to the black end of the cable that has blue at the
other end.. referring to the motherboard manual, ensure that the 'blue' end
is plugged into the IDE socket that has the lowest number.. attach the CD
drive to a second IDE cable that will be plugged into the IDE socket with
the highest number.. ensure that both the WD and the CD drive are jumpered
for 'master'..

Now reboot the machine.. does it all work?.. do all of the programs work?..

If the answer is YES..

Shutdown the machine.. attach the Seagate 160 to the grey connector on the
IDE cable that is plugged into the socket with the lowest number (the cable
with the blue end)..

Restart the machine.. does it all work?.. do all of the programs work?..

If the answer is YES..

Take the machine to somebody who knows how to clone an OS from one drive to
another.. by your own admission, you have little to no idea how to work
programs of that genre, and without an XP CD, you are on the road to losing
everything..

If the answer to any of the above is NO..

Take the machine to somebody who knows how to clone an OS from one drive to
another.. by your own admission, you have little to no idea how to work
programs of that genre, and without an XP CD, you are on the road to losing
everything..

I am not being mean here.. you appear to be way out of your depth, and
continued attempts by you will 'end in tears'

Mike is right in hia assesment but there is another way.
Leave the original drive in its original location on the cable and hook up
the new drive as the slave drive on the same cable.Dont forget to jumper it
as a slave.
You will have to format the new drive in order to use it...admin tools/disk
managent
Take a look at the programs you have on the old drive and see which ones you
have the original CD to....remove those under control Panel/add&remove and
reinstall to the new drive. This will make some room on the old drive for
future XP updates
Any new programs/games that you install in the future can be installed onto
the new drive you just need to watch during the install.
This way you have changed nothing,XP is still where its expected to be and
you have lots of room on the new drive for whatever

The computer would be better off if the larger drive was the boot drive.. a
13gb drive is getting to be a little long in the tooth, too..

OK guys.
I've got the drives resequenced and running, with the WD as master, SG as
slave (both on IDE1), and the optical drive alone on IDE2. Programs run
although with an occasional hiccup - e.g. the system spontaneously rebooted
when I closed a MS Word file - every time. As I look closer, I'm finding
identical program files on both the WD & the SG drive - like MS Word. Seems
as if when the SG was originally installed, a lot of program files were
copied to it during the install. Things just don't feel 'stable'. I
suspect there's a major catastrophe (O/S reinstall) in my future.

Unless you disagree, I think my next step should be to remove as many
unnecessary files and replaceable programs as possible from the older WD, so
there's room to install SP 2, then format and partition the SG so it's ready
to be cloned from the WD. After the SG is cloned, I'll resequence it to be
the boot master , then if all is well, wipe the WD slave for other use.

If you know, tell me a bit about installing XP, SP 2. Will it prompt for
the XP O/S disk, to verify authenticity? And have you heard of any problems
with installation crashing the system, necessitating an O/S reinstall? Or
should I look elsewhere?

Thanks for the help to-date.

Have you run it with the WD drive only attached?.. does it work ok?.. if
everything is there and kind of working, put the SG back as slave and format
it using the XP native tools..

My Computer - right click and select 'Manage'.. when the window opens, go to
Storage - Disk Management..

Format the Seagate.. when done, close out of the window..

Now you need to go to www.acronis.com and download Acronis TrueImage.. use
this program to clone the OS onto the second drive..

Follow the instructions implicitly.. at the end of the process, you should
have an SG that will boot to Windows.. obviously, you have to remove the WD,
jumper the SG as master, and reboot..

OK.. does the SG work ok?.. do all of the programs work as well as they did
on the WD?..

If the answer is YES..

You can now jumper the WD as slave, install it back into the case and format
it as you did the SG..

The part where you do have a problem.. you need XP installation media on CD
to be able to fix the problems with the OS, and installation media for any
other program on the computer that has a problem..

Mike,
Yes, it worked OK with only the WD attached, so I 'slaved' the SG, and both
run OK, although as I said MS Word won't close normally - spontaneously
reboots the system.

I'll format the SG tomorrow (Wednesday) per your instructions. Am I safe in
assuming that after going to "My Computer - right click and select
'Manage'.. when the window opens, go to Storage - Disk Management. . ." I
simply right-click the SG and select Format (or select the SG, click
Actions-Format)? Just want to be sure, since I don't see FORMAT as a
visible primary selection.

I looked at the trial download page at acronis.com - is Snap Deploy the one
I'm after?

Mike,
I have a 'Pause' here before I can continue. After many, many unsuccessful
attempts to enter the BIOS (to change the boot sequence to Floppy, CD then
HD), the system would only spontaneously reboot, giving me the list of
starting Windows in Safe Mode, Command Prompt, or Network. None of those
helped. The system continued to reboot. One time, during the BIOS display,
it paused long enough to read something about 'drives disabled'. One other
time, a (blue screen) message displayed something to the effect of a
windows\system32\security . . . file was missing, corrupt, and a 3rd
possibility I missed.

It was booting from the WD drive (with the SG as slave). Out of curiosity,
I changed the data cables to boot the WD only. No improvement. Then
changed to boot from the SG only. That worked (Windows loaded normally).
Then changed the cables to boot the SG (master) and the WD (slave). Booted
OK, AND the WD shows up intact. Both drives are on the same cable.

I have Partition Magic on the machine. Ran it - it shows both drives, but
now the CD label has changed from E: to D: and the WD is E:. SG is C:. The
CD (D:) is on a separate cable to IDE2. Still can't get to the BIOS.
Hitting the DEL key (per display) causes the initial BIOS screen to
redisplay for about 1/4 second, and then it starts XP.

Put the data cables back to WD (master) & SG (slave). Won't boot. Still
seeing a momentary flash of a message on a blue screen, but too fast to
read. Suspect it's saying the same thing about the System32\security file.

Changed back to SG (master) & WD (slave). Same as described before - both
drives show with C: (SG - master), D: (CD), & E: (WD - slave).

JACKPOT! I was able to access the BIOS.
All drives set to Auto. Changed boot sequence to 1) Floppy, 2) CD,
3)IDE-0. Question here: why does the BIOS call it IDE-0 and the M'board
socket is labeled IDE1?
Also see "S.M.A.R.T. for Hard Disks: Disabled. Do I need to be
concerned about that & what is it?
Saved BIOS settings. OK & XP loaded OK.

Not sure what's happened, but I'm wondering if I'm looking at impending WD
failure???

There used to be a file on previous versions of Windows, named Bootlog.txt.
Apparently it's changed names, or found to be unuseful. Thought it might
provide some information about the WD boot problem. Oops. Closed the
Search window, and see a 'nastygram': Explorer.EXE - Application Error The
instruction at "0x77f5215c" referenced memory at "0x00000067". The memory
could not be "written". That was followed by another Error window: "Runtime
error 216 at 77F5215c"

Did a 'Reboot' - OK. Did a 'Restart' to check boot sequence with Partition
Magic dvd in drive - it booted from the CD, but before starting PM,
displayed an error "Internal Error Code 806", then locked up at a DOS
prompt. In any event, it booted. Rebooted OK to windows. Rebooted again -
can't get to BIOS - twice . . . nope, three times.

Break time. My brain's turning to mush.

Need to add something here as a supplement to the other message (today).
In Safe Mode, the files run through MUP.SYS, and then everything stops.
While looking at a web site about that, someone said they disabled Quick
Post in their BIOS. If I can ever get back into the BIOS, I'll try that.
