Rescue/Recovery Disk?

P

Peri

I have WinXP Home.
Also I have Norton 2005 with Goback 4.0.
I cant find reference to Rescue or Recovery Disks except a reference to
uninstall or disable Goback before making one.

My Original Disk is the basic one without SP2.
Last time I considered using it it warned me of the differences between the
versions.

So is it possible to make an updated recovery disk and how?

I have a feeling that the answer will be embarrassingly simple. :)

2nd question:
Is it possible to back up the Registry onto a CD then restore it directly
back over a damaged one?
And how easy is this?

2nd question:

Get both of these...

NTREGOPT NT Registry Optimizer
ERUNT The Emergency Recovery Utility NT
http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt/

ERUNT [[Note: The "Export registry" function in Regedit is USELESS (!) to
make
a complete backup of the registry. Neither does it export the whole
registry (for example, no information from the "SECURITY" hive is
saved), nor can the exported file be used later to replace the current
registry with the old one. Instead, if you re-import the file, it is
merged with the current registry, leaving you with an absolute mess of
old and new registry keys.]]

NTREGOPT [[Similar to Windows 9x/Me, the registry files in an NT-based
system
can become fragmented over time, occupying more space on your hard
disk than necessary and decreasing overall performance. You should
use the NTREGOPT utility regularly, but especially after installing
or uninstalling a program, to minimize the size of the registry files
and optimize registry access.

The program works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch",
thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously
modified or deleted keys.

Note that the program does NOT change the contents of the registry in
any way, nor does it physically defrag the registry files on the drive
(as the PageDefrag program from SysInternals does). The optimization
done by NTREGOPT is simply compacting the registry hives to the
minimum size possible.]]

Also, consider backing up System State. You use the builtin backup wizard
to back this up and restore it.

System State backups are typically about 300 MB. Probably best to backup
to
a HD file then burn to CD. See:

Thanks for the reply. I cannot find Backup Wizard, or "The Welcome Tab"
whatever that might be. I have searched for welcome and backup in files and
folders.

Thanks for the reply. I have installed the two programs as advised.

Peri,

Run NTREGOPT and reboot. Then run ERUNT. I use ERUNT to backup to my hard
drive and to CD.

Keep having fun!
