Windows Rescue Disks

How important is it to have Windows Rescue Disks?
What, exactly, do they do? When are they used?
Can I make a Rescue CD? How?
Do Rescue Disks need to be updated frequently?
Windows Help did not mention this topic.
Could not find much useful info on this by Googling. Is this because the
Rescue Disks are nonessential, or did I fail to find the site I need?

Rescue disks are not used in Windows XP. The XP installation CD is
bootable and has tools on it for repairing the system - either by the
recovery console or the repair install. Note that the recovery console
is not an automated tool.
