Required registry information...

I upgraded my Dell dimension 4300 from Win Me to XP Home edition ( better
later than never).
Some programs did not work and needed to be reinstalled. After reinstalling
Microsoft Office Word 2000 SR-1 (came preinstalled with the computer)
a window opens with a message : "Required registry information is missing
and this application can
not run. Please rerun setup to correct the problem" . The same story with
Microsoft office 2000 - premium.
Rerunning setup does not correct the problem. Uninstalled and reinstalled
did not help.
With Win Me both run fine on the same computer.
I tried fixes in Q236590 and 236592 but it did not help.

I suspect that the problem is with Windows rather than with Office. Should I
reinstall Windows?
I will appreciate any suggestions.
What is data1.msi? It is on the disc but not on my hard drive. Do I need it?
If yes, how to get it on the hard drive?
What is Eraser? Microsoft article 239938 states that version 3.1 is disabled
when Win XP is installed. Do I need an eraser prior to reinstalling Office?
If yes, what version for XP Home edition?
Thanks
