frustrated

I have had my Gateway computer since Oct. 2001 and have
recently had a new motherboard installed. I have
reinstalled Microsoft Works and ever since then a message
box entitled, "Network Connections" pops up every few
mintues and says, "You (or a program) have requested
information from microsoft.com. Which connection do you
want to use?" Then it says, "Which connection do you
want to use?" and shows only Dial up connection

When I go ahead and use the dial up connectiona and am
connected to the internet, it begins to send and receive
millions of bytes and takes hours. I have never had the
time to let it go to completion and always have to cancel
before completion.

Why is it doing this and do you know what program has
requested it? It has never happened before the
installtion of the new motherboard.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It may be as part of the M/B change a repair installation was done which has
activated automtic windows updates. Turn this off if it is on.

Only if you want to turn it off of course :-) But it may explain why MB of
info is downloading.

A program or spyware might initializing the dial-up connection.

To disable automatic dial completely (means no program can automatically
dial, however you can do manually.)

1. Right click the My computer icon (Desktop), open Manage/Services and
Applications/Services.
2. In the right pane scroll down to Remote Accces Auto Connection Manager
and double click it.
3. Use the Startup type drop box and choose Disabled.

always ask me before auto dialing. Also, Disable autodial while I am logged
on.

In the Enable Auto-Dial By Location dialog box, select each location for
which you want the automatic dialing feature to operate. Reboot.
