Request advice new motherboard

L

Langholm

I want to upgrade my PC with a new CPU, memory and motherboard.
My present graphics card has a reasonable performance, so I'd rather keep it
after the upgrade. It needs an AGP slot.
Since most modern graphic cards now require PCI-Express slots, I thought it
would be a good idea to go for a motherboard with both slots on board, just
to be on the safe side for later.
Can anyone recommend me some good motherboards? I have not yet decided
between Intel or AMD for the CPU, the board should however support dual core
and have a performing modern chipset.
Thanks for any suggestion you wish to share with me.

If you are going to spend the money for a new cpu, mobo and RAM...
you might as well go all the way and get the pci-x video too...
I doubt if any of the new boards even bother with AGP any more.
Unless you are a gamer...even a lower priced video card should be fine.
(You can sell your old stuff on ebay to pay for it.)

I've always been a big fan of AMD...but I think right now Intel is leading
the race.

Philo, what memory does your current system utilize? If you're going to
keep your AGP, you might as well keep the memory too, if it's DDR400/PC3200.
Then you could go w/ this board, if Intel is the way you want to go (LGA
775):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813157092

These three boards will accommodate AGP, but not DDR (DDR2 only):

If you need/want to AGP, and use DDR, here's the only board I'm aware of:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813157097

FYI it's currently out of stock at Newegg.

Asrock 775 VIA-MST.
VIA chipset.
533-800-1066 FSB.
AGP and PCI-E slots.
DDR and DDR2 slots. 2 slots each. Maximum 2 GBs. You can't use both at the
same time (of course).
Intel D and Core2Duo CPU's (and other lesser ones).
I use one (with Intel D930) and am pleased with it (apart from the sound
output which I can't get to work; but that's probably down to myself and not
the motherboard).
It's not expensive.

Sylvain.

VERY few quality motherboards off both AGP and PCI-E x16 slots. You choose
one or the other.
