REQ suggestion: freeware to make list of all MS Word password protected files

I am trying to unpassword protect all of my MS Office (Word 97/2000)
password protected files, I know the passwords for them (knock on
wood), but I have word files scattered all over my computer, and 99%
of them are not password rotected. I don't want to open every file
just to make sure if it is protected or not. How do I find just the
ones that have a password with them, is there a utility that will look
for all .doc files, and then check if they a password or not? Maybe
something intended to break passwords would be able to know if they
were protected or not?

Dave,

I posted this several days ago using a free news posting service, but
it doesn't seem to have made it. I'm trying Google Groups this time,
and keeping my fingers crossed...

You need AVG Anti-virus to do what you want.

- Scan entire hard disk, all files
- When finished, look in the scan log
- Voila! Those .doc files that failed to open because they were
password protected, will be listed there
- Save the list

While not dedicated freeware to do what you want, it serves the exact
same purpose. HTH.

Thanks! Very clever and helpful.
I discovered one piece of information that may be of help to someone
doing the same task- the free Word Viewer from microsoft can open
password protected files if given the password, and you can copy and
paste out of it.
